Golf Is A Big Snooooooooze!

While the United Kingdom claims that it has 2 million regular golfers, but 70 per cent of people in the UK who had watched the sport reported that it was “boring”, including 52 per cent who described it as “very boring.” This is according to a YouGov survey report that has just been published.

Amongst this group of people who have “switched off” on golf, 78 per cent of women reported finding the sport boring compared with 63 per cent of men.

This result was rejected by Keith Pelley, chief executive of the European Tour, who said: “Totally disagree and our fan engagement in 2017 would also suggest otherwise. Last year, the European Tour saw large TV ratings increases, while our social engagement increased by 35 per cent.

Meanwhile, the City of Toronto is considering a review of its municipal golf courses as it struggles with rising maintenance costs and declining interest in the sport. Toronto owns seven golf courses, which typically bring in US$4.5 million to US$5 million per year – not enough to recoup the costs of running them.

The number of rounds played at municipal golf courses decreased by about 15 per cent between 2007 and 2016, from 187,000 to 157,965.
